Use QR codes to create a science trail about materials in your local environment.

This resource allows teachers to create a Materials Trail within their own school or a local environment to help young students explore the common materials that make up their environment.

The trails are created by fixing QR codes to different materials so that small groups of students, armed with a tablet can find out about designated materials and answer a few simple questions.

On completion of the trail students can take a quiz on the terminology and print out their own certificate that will contain their score.

How can this resource be used?

Teachers create a Materials Trail by sticking QR codes (downloaded from this resource) that have been distributed around the school site. The QR codes reveal information: images or video on each page, links to the glossary of materials terms, and ‘True or False?’ questions to answer.

Pupils with a tablet can seek out the QR codes and learn about the materials from the webpages (normal or advanced) that have been written specifically for this resource. At the end of the trail students can take a quiz on the terminology and print out their own certificate that will contain their score.
