Primary Science Teacher Awards

Celebrating and rewarding outstanding teachers of primary science

Nominations open autumn 2024

Help us celebrate the very best teaching practice in the UK

Our Primary Science Teacher Awards (PSTAs) celebrate the very best science teaching in primary schools across the UK.

Awards are made to teachers who demonstrate excellent classroom practice in science and who do outstanding work to raise standards in primary science teaching and learning in their own schools and beyond. Teachers who receive an award become part of the PSTT College of Fellows and are further supported to develop and disseminate best practice in primary science education.

We believe that the collective strength of the PSTT College is dependent on having a diverse mix of backgrounds, experiences and perspectives; we welcome nominations from all teachers, and in particular those from under-represented groups.

The PSTAs are supported by the Royal Society, the Association for Science Education and TTS Group.

Nominations will open for 2024/25 later this year. Stay up-to-date by joining our mailing list to be notified.

Benefits of winning a Primary Science Teacher Award

The Primary Science Teacher Awards (PSTAs) recognise the exceptional efforts of teachers who make a difference to children’s learning and enjoyment of science and the support they provide to colleagues.

Winners receive:

  • a personal prize of £500
  • an invitation to join the PSTT College as a Fellow
  • PSTT resources to support teaching and learning
  • a selection of TTS resources for their school

Nomination criteria

The awards are open to all current practising primary teachers (full or part-time, in schools in the UK, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man only) who:

  • are innovative and creative in teaching science
  • engage pupils in the excitement and fascination of science
  • inspire and support colleagues and make a significant contribution to developing science in their school
  • support colleagues in other schools, locally, regionally or nationally to raise the profile of science and to improve the quality of primary school science teaching and learning.

Primary Science Teachers of the Year have been chosen from across the UK by PSTT since 2003

All winners are noted alongside the school in which they were teaching at the time they were judged for their award.

Each year, one award, the Keith Bishop Award, recognises the achievement of a teacher working in challenging circumstances. This award was named in honour of Keith Bishop, a valued friend of PSTT who sadly passed away in 2010.
