We’re pleased to share an important update on the leadership of PSTT’s Board of Trustees.
After several years of dedicated service as Chair, Fred Young will be stepping down from this role. During his time as Chair, Fred has strengthened PSTT’s governance, supported the charity through a range of initiatives and championed the promotion of excellent primary science teaching across the UK. His leadership has been instrumental in carrying out our current strategy, which focuses on strengthening science teaching and leadership in priority areas, increasing the confidence and competence of science practitioners, embedding high-quality science in Initial Teacher Education and early career teaching and ensuring PSTT remains a widely respected voice for primary science.
As we thank Fred for his invaluable contribution, we’re pleased to share that PSTT’s Board of Trustees will now be jointly led by two Co-chairs, providing strong and collaborative leadership for the next phase of our strategy. We’re delighted to welcome Paul Shuter and Olivia Thompson as our new Co-chairs of Trustees.
Paul brings a wealth of educational expertise, with over a decade of teaching in large comprehensive schools and involvement in national curriculum development projects. He later held senior roles in educational publishing, including Primary Publishing Director at Heinemann and Managing Director of Ginn, Heinemann and Rigby, before running a publishing consultancy. Paul has also served as PSTT’s Vice Chair of Trustees in recent years.
Olivia is the Director of Strategic Capability at the Nuclear Innovation Research Office, advising the UK Government on nuclear power, medical isotope production and fusion. She has extensive experience in leadership, equality, diversity and inclusion, and early career development. Olivia also has a background as a research scientist, with international recognition for her work on radionuclides in the environment.
Together, Paul and Olivia bring exceptional expertise in education, strategy, and leadership, ensuring strong stewardship of PSTT’s mission in the years ahead.
