PSTT response to the Curriculum and Assessment Review Final Report

The Primary Science Teaching Trust welcomes the publication of the Curriculum and Assessment Review Final Report for England.

When contributing to the review over the past year, PSTT highlighted the importance of a more focused science curriculum – one that enables deeper exploration of fundamental concepts and the connections between them. We are pleased that the review panel has recognised the importance of greater cohesion and consistency across the primary science curriculum, with an emphasis on developing children’s deep knowledge and skills.

We also support the report’s call for a clear rationale behind curriculum activity at each stage. The suggestion that the curriculum could define essential science experiences for all pupils reflects recommendations made by PSTT and our partners on the Primary Curriculum Advisory Group.

It is encouraging to see the panel highlight the value of purposeful, high-quality practical work in science. Such experiences are vital for developing children’s understanding of scientific practices and concepts, as well as their thinking skills and oracy.

We endorse the recommendation that the curriculum should explicitly address the scientific principles behind climate change and sustainability.

Last month, PSTT and our partners published the new State of Primary Science Education report, which highlighted ongoing challenges for science education in England and across the UK. In particular, it revealed a decline in teacher confidence and reduced access to science-focused CPD, mentoring and support. As the government considers the recommendations of the review, we hope this will be seen as an opportunity to strengthen teacher confidence and capability, alongside reshaping the content of the curriculum. We stand ready to support this process and help ensure meaningful, lasting improvements in primary science education.
