Professional Learning for Primary Science Subject Leaders

Join the Primary Science Teaching Trust for a full day of practical CPD designed specifically for primary science subject leaders.

This event supports you in developing the knowledge, skills and confidence to lead science effectively across your school. Each session focuses on achievable, high-impact approaches that strengthen science teaching and provision, with a consistent emphasis on the role of the subject leader in leading change.

Through interactive workshops, classroom-tested strategies and opportunities to share practice with peers, delegates will explore how small changes can lead to big impact in teaching and learning.

Session information

All sessions are delivered by award-winning facilitators with experience teaching in primary classrooms.

Focuses on low-cost, quick-impact strategies that teachers can use in the classroom to create opportunities for pupils to revisit and engage with scientific vocabulary. Actively using new vocabulary reinforces children’ learning, supports recall and strengthens oracy skills.

Consider the starting point for investigations and how we can systematically plan investigations using post it note planning boards, so children are investigating their own questions.

Try a TAPS focused assessment lesson plan and see how this approach makes the assessment of children’s knowledge and working scientifically skills valid, reliable and manageable.

Consider where the maths and science curriculum overlap and where we can make rich, meaningful links to develop the skills in both subjects.

Reflect on what effective provision for science in the Early Years Foundation might look like and review some free, high-quality resources describing stimulating provocations to develop young children’s skills, knowledge and understanding of the world through playful exploration.

Share the Thinking Frames approach, which supports independence and regulation for your learners. Try one and then create your own Thinking Frame to use back in the classroom.

Teachers will be asked to bring along a resource or a strategy that they have used and would like to share with other delegates. Each teacher will be given up to 3 minutes to share. We will also share some of PSTT’s freely downloadable, ready-to-use resources.
