Effective Science Leadership is a six-part webinar series designed to support new and developing primary science leaders, as well as those looking to refresh their leadership practice.

Across the series, we will explore key aspects of leading primary science, including curriculum development, progression, monitoring, assessment, enrichment and staff development.

Webinars take place from 16:00-17:00.

Leading primary science: Roles and responsibilities

This session will take a look at the key responsibilities of a science leader and share tips, strategies and resources to support you to carry them out effectively. We will explore ways to audit current science provision and think about turning your findings into an action plan.

Session aims:

  • Understand the key responsibilities of a primary science leader
  • Consider how science fits with whole school priorities
  • Reflect on current practice and begin thinking about areas for development

Curriculum and progression in primary science

Explore how to build a coherent and effective curriculum that is impactful for the pupils in your setting at this session.

Session aims:

  • Identify common curriculum misconceptions and pitfalls
  • Reflect on sequencing of knowledge and skills
  • Understand how to ensure progression throughout school

Monitoring science across your school

In this session we will explore effective approaches to monitoring science across the school. The session focuses on gathering meaningful evidence to identify strengths, support staff and drive improvement.

  • Share a range of monitoring strategies relevant to primary science
  • Understand how to turn findings from monitoring into impact on practice

Effective assessment in primary science

Explore a range of formative and summative assessment strategies and reflect on how best to implement these across your school at this session.

  • Reflect on the principles of effective assessment in science
  • Share a range of resources to support with assessment

Enhancing and enriching primary science provision

Primary science learning often extends beyond lessons with clubs, trips, visitors and other wider experiences enhancing children’s learning. This session takes a look at how to enrich your primary science curriculum and shares a range of resources to support provision.

Session aims:

  • Understand how to ensure enrichment activities are meaningful and effective
  • Share a range of activities and resources to support primary science enhancement

 

Webinar 6: Wednesday 9 June 2027

Supporting and leading your staff team

This session explores effective ways to engage your staff team in improving science teaching and learning and will encourage reflection on your own leadership style.

Session aims:

  • Understand what current research says about teacher development
  • Share strategies for effective leadership, including delivering staff CPD and implementing new strategies
