IAN DORMER

For nearly 30 years he has been Managing Director of North East England based specialist high voltage engineering contractor Rosh Engineering Ltd. It has grown to become one of the largest privately held contractors in its field working in power generation through to holding framework contracts for the maintenance and repair of transformers with several UK Distribution Network Operators, as well as large industrial sites. A rich variety of experience in both Northern Europe as well as the Middle East and Central America has kept the company at the forefront of its industry.

Rosh Engineering has long held a commitment to skills and staff development and has won many awards for its pro-active health & safety through to its developments in environmental advancements in the power industry.

After joining the Institute of Directors to learn the important aspects of running a business, for professional development and to share best practice, Ian slowly became more involved with the IoD both regionally and nationally. He was appointed national Chairman in 2012 for a 3 year term.

Ian has held a number of Non-Executive Director roles ranging from the Board of Regional Development Agency, ONE North East, through to Chairing Business Link Tyne & Wear. He was on the Board of City Development Company 1NG through to Chairing Enterprise Development NE which handled a £125million European Venture Capital fund.

His passion for life-long learning has included acting as a Trustee of his old Comprehensive School (now an Academy) through to becoming Chairman of Newcastle College. He regularly undergoes personal professional development & qualified as a Chartered Director in 2013. Ian continues to contribute to the IoD’s Professional Development courses and conferences sharing his experiences, warts and all. He was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in Her Majesty the Queen's 2016 New Year Honours list.

Ian is married to Prof Julia Newton, Professor of Ageing & Medicine at Newcastle University and Deputy Medical Director at Newcastle Hospitals Foundation Trust, and Medical Director for the NE & Cumbria Academic Health Science Network. They have one daughter, born 1998 and one son, born 2002. He loves ski-ing and travel.
