Janet Barnett became Area Mentor for North-East England in 2015 after retiring from the primary classroom.
A chemistry graduate, she first worked in technical publishing followed by a career in industrial labs including quality assurance and research & development before finally becoming a primary teacher. Whilst at Newker Primary School, Chester-le-Street, she obtained a secondment at the Science Learning Centre North-East which led to involvement with Durham University and the Primary Science Quality Mark.
Janet was awarded Primary Science Teacher of the Year in 2012 which has brought many opportunities including access to PSTT College funding for her 2014 project Sporting Science: Cricket http://www.learningbeyondtheboundary.co.uk/activit... based at Durham International Cricket Ground.
Since retiring in 2014, a whole new world of science opportunities has opened thanks to PSTT, including the role of Area Mentor. She has also become the North-East England Senior Regional Hub Leader for PSQM and co-authored a book, Jumpstart! Science Outdoors: Cross-Curricular Games and Activities by Janet Barnett and Rosemary Feasey www.routledge.com/products/9781138925069.
It’s a privilege to be involved with PSTT and I love working with the North East College Fellows who are all amazing, inspirational teachers!
