This unit has been written by Dr Lynne Bianchi (Senior Research Fellow) and Penny Thompson (Senior Lecturer) at Centre for Science Education, Sheffield Hallam University. We hope that through learning about the Smarter Schools project that you will find inspiration to explore some of the approaches presented and look towards GROWing your own ideas for a Smarter School.
The Smarter Schools project involved a family of 5 primary schools in North Sheffield, South Yorkshire and the Centre for Science Education, Sheffield Hallam University. During the academic year 2008-9, the focus was to bring together the development of scientific enquiry and children's personal skills and capabilities. Coaching was used to develop a more reflective approach to teacher CPD and was the process by which teachers developed and embedded new ideas into their science teaching.
